Is bootcamp, not just outdoor HIIT? High Intensity Interval Training.

No. Bootcamp is not just a form of outdoor HIIT. HIIT is a specific modality of training whereby high activity levels are maintained for relatively short periods of time.

There may be occasions when a number of HIIT activities are utilised during a bootcamp session, but typically, a bootcamp session will involve a variety of different training techniques as well as HIIT, on occasion.

A bootcamp session may incorporate strength work. It may incorporate activities designed to increase stamina. Further, within a bootcamp session, a longer period of sustained, steady state activity will often be used as a calorie burner.

HIIT is a term used to describe one particular type of training activity, which may be used in any training session. One form of HIIT which is often used is “Tabata”. Tabata is a technique whereby short sharp bursts of activity are followed by a shorter break. The activity / brake / activity / brake sequence is maintained for a relatively short period of time. For instance, a typical Tabata Interval session would contain repeats of 20 seconds of activity followed by 10 seconds of rest. This repetition would continue for a total of four minutes

We will look at the benefits of HIIT training in a further short article but for the purposes of today, HIIT is one method of training used within the bootcamp session. Bootcamp itself is not a form of HIIT.
