mix it up

I’d spent about a month doing pretty much nothing else but press-ups every morning. I had a simple routine which I knew really well, and all I was doing was making it more and more intense as time went by.

But I got bored with it, and stopped altogether for a while. Now I feel that much of the work in did in that period has been undone, been lost. There are so any exercises, endless, infinite possibilities, so there is no excuse for this. It’s plain lazy, and didn’t serve me well.

When I attend or plan outdoor group sessions, they are always different, and have been for all the years I’ve been going. This is one of the reasons I stick with them, I never know what’s coming.

Now, having understood for myself that repetition is the enemy, I have upended my morning routine and make it different every day. I may know what’s coming up – but my body doesn’t. I’ve also set myself a few specific goals to achieve, and inching towards them is proving satisfying.

If you find yourself doing the same thing over and over and over again, try to step out of it, try something new. Mixing it up will make all the difference to your commitment
