No need to rush

A few nights ago I was at an outdoor fitness session run by my ex-swimming coach (super trainer – I didn’t get on with swimming but that’s for another day). In the past I’ve had Personal Trainers and found them to be brilliant when I had specific goals in mind. Now that I want to keep generally fit and active, and be able to run well (I try to keep myself half-marathon ready), I’m not so specific as I used to be.

With many other trainers I’ve found that I’d only be satisfied with a workout if I’d been collapsing with exhaustion or drowning in a pool of sweat at the end of a session. Not so the other night. We worked areas we’ve not touched before, pushed hard with strength exercises, and worked in a really precise and technical way. It was superb, one of the best sessions for a quite a while.

Although we didn’t run round and round the park in a relentless sweatfest, I wasn’t wondering if I’d even last. I didn’t burn millions of calories, but boy did I feel like I’d done a proper workout.

Slowing down and concentrating on a focussed session made such a welcome change

(Maybe not as slow as this fellow though!)
