Julia M
What have you done to keep fit in the past?
Before having children, I enjoyed walking and Pilates, but due to health issues didn’t do anything that pushed my cardio system. As my health improved over the years, I tried to take up running to combat weight gained in pregnancy, but I wasn’t consistent and I was definitely a “fair-weather” runner. Each child would lead to a 2 year gap of exercise (other than running after them!).
What 3 words would you use to describe Owen’s approach to your fitness goals?
Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. (Thanks Julia !! ed.)
How have you benefitted, personally, from working with Owen?
My strength has improved and I noticed that I am able to carry out my day-to-day tasks with less effort. After a few months of consistently attending sessions, friends made comments on how much weight I had lost. Because I enjoy the physical exercise, the environment, and the social element of Owen’s fitness sessions, I am motivated to be consistent come rain or shine.
What would you say to anyone worried about exercising outside, especially in the rain, or dark?
That was definitely a concern for me and I wanted to bail the first time it rained when we had a session booked, but I knew I would benefit so much from going. So, I went and was pleasantly surprised at how much shelter the trees gave and was also surprised that I didn’t end up looking like I had come out of a bog. There is also something very energising about exercising in the rain and I have no qualms about going out now.
How does exercising, in the Park, work for you?
I love it. Being in the fresh air and seeing the vibrant colours of nature are in and of itself therapeutic, but Owen also makes use of the trees, benches, fences, stone walls, or other things we happen upon to add variety to our workouts. No two workouts have been the same but they are all enjoyable.
